Hi,
I'm submitting a picture of my 79 Trans-Am in the hopes that it can be included
in your picture gallery, as I see there are currently no Pontiacs in the
gallery.
My combo utilizes a 455 Pontiac block that is bored/stroked to 467 cubic inches.
It's fed via factory iron d-port heads (1968 casting # 62's), a Comp solid
roller cam, a Torker-II intake, and a Holley 850 that has been modified to flow
930. It is also enhanced by a NOS "Big Shot" plate nitrous system.
It's backed by a TH400 (reverse manual valve body, no trans brake) and a 8.5"
10-bolt filled with a Moser spool and 31-spline axles, along with 3.73 gears.
The chassis/suspension is stock, with the original WS6 front springs (cut one
coil to lower ride height) aided by Summit 3-way adjustable front shocks. Out
back are Landrum 250 lb. 4-leaf springs with Herb Adams 3-way adjustables (soon
to be replaced with Koni SPA-1 shocks), and of course, CalTracs!
The picture was taken just recently at the 2003 Pontiac Nationals at Norwalk
Raceway Park (Ohio). This was my first outing using the nitrous and the car
performed very well.
There are no electronics in the car, this is a street/strip footbrake racer. The
best time on the motor has been 11.63 @ 119 MPH with a poor 1.71 60'. This is
due to the fact that the engine and convertor are setup for nitrous use, and
naturally aspirated, quite frankly, it's a "pig".
At Norwalk, the best time on motor was 11.68 @ 117, but with a 225-HP shot from
launch, it really woke up! I went all the way to the quarter-finals during
Saturday's race, running consistent low 10.30's at around 130 MPH, with a best
time of 10.30 @ 131. All 60' times on the bottle were 1.49 or 1.50 (the CalTracs
worked extremely well).
Needless to say, I'm very pleased with the results, especially considering I'm
going to up the n2o hit to 400-HP in the near future, utilizing a Schnitz
progressive controller. In good air, the current tune-up may be good for
10-teens, possibly 10-oh's.
9's are not that far off.
Just wanted to drop you a line and a pic, since there are no Pontiacs in your
gallery. There are a bunch of us out here racing hard core now. I don't see very
many 2nd gen. Firebirds with Cal-Trac's, but every time I talk to the owners, I
tell them how well the CalTracs are working for me. Just a thought, you may want
to revise your catalog on the 70-81 Camaro CalTracs to say "Camaro/Firebird". It
may draw more business.
Thanks for your time!
Best Regards,
